"My childhood was spent in a gold mining town in Northern Ontario...Our house had an oil burning "Quebec heater" in the dining room and a wood cooking stove in the kitchen. I have early memories of Dad splitting kindling, getting the house warm enough for the rest of us to get out of bed...When the fires got going, a pot of hot cereal was put on the stove. My favourite was Red River Cereal. I was allowed a teaspoon of brown sugar to put on it. I heaped my teaspoon and then held it in my left hand while my right index finger distributed the grains of sugar like a smooth brown blanket. Then came the milk. I can still remember the texture and the taste. Today I'm in my sixties, living in the city, making Red River Cereal in a bowl in the microwave. I still love it.
